Dudley Co-Op

Overview

The Dudley Co-op, founded in 1958 as an alternative to other on-campus housing, has a long and vibrant tradition as a progressive, participatory community. Housed in two Victorian homes located between Harvard and Porter squares, the Dudley Co-op offers a welcome counterpoint to traditional Harvard living for many students.

About Dudley Co-Op

The Dudley Co-op is an invaluable resource for undergraduates who are looking for an alternative to standard House life at Harvard. The Co-op is a small community of The Co-op is a small community of 32 undergraduates and two graduate student tutors living in two Victorian houses not far from the Quad. We are a tightly-knit and supportive group of people that all take an active role in shaping the Co-op. We strive to create an environment that is open, evolving, and eager to listen.

As a cooperative, we purchase our own foods, make communal decisions at weekly meetings, and collectively take care of chores around the house. The Co-op is great for people who are interested in working together, living with communitarian values, and participating in bread baking, cooking, gardening, or any of the many other things we do! We spend an average of five hours per week doing chores. Since we do so much of our own upkeep, room and board are significantly less expensive than in the Houses.

The Co-op is located in a residential neighborhood between Harvard and Porter Squares. Since it is Harvard housing, typical Harvard rules apply. Two graduate Residential Tutors live with us. We are part of the broader Dudley Community, which has a Resident Dean and offers all the academic services you would find in a House like pre-law, pre-med, and fellowships advising.

We cook communal vegetarian (mostly vegan) dinner every night at 6:30, and students are always welcome to drop by and experience the Co-op with us.

Students may also quarter-board, an arrangement in which students take part in one-quarter of Co-op chores and are included in meals and events but do not live at the Co-op. Quarter-boarding is a low cost per semester, and the Co-op can offer financial support to cover the cost. Students who quarter-board and then decide to move to the Co-op receive a slightly higher pick in the room draw process upon moving in.
