March Senior Common Room Dinner

March 4, 2019

Come pick up your (free!) ticket to our March Senior Common Room Dinner, featuring a talk and lively conversation with Professor Laura Frahm on film experiments at the Bauhaus in conjunction with the centennial celebrations across campus.

In conjunction with the Bauhaus Centennial, this talk explores how members of the Bauhaus—one of the most progressive art, architecture, and design schools in the early 20th century—actively experimented with film in the 1920s and early 1930s; it traces how Bauhäusler developed film scripts, created playful film montages, and experimented with filmstrips across the different Bauhaus workshops. Complementing the five Bauhaus film programs at the Harvard Art Museums and the Harvard Film Archive (Feb 28–Apr 22), this talk with place special emphasis on material experiments with celluloid and cellophane for material exercises, equilibrium studies, furniture coatings, photomontages, weaving works, and exhibition design.

Laura Frahm is Associate Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies and teaches within the graduate program “Film and Visual Studies” since fall 2012.  Within GSAS, she is particularly involved in the “Harvard Horizons” program, for which she co-developed the Mentoring Program with Pamela Pollok in spring 2013 and continued to serve as a Faculty Mentor for Harvard Horizons scholars in the past six years.  Her research focuses on the intersections between media, architecture, and design, and she has published several books and articles on urban cinema, urban design, film and architecture, media experimentation, and the history of visual music. Her current book project, entitled “Film by Design: Bauhaus and the Moving Image,” provides a history of film experimentation at the Bauhaus between 1919 and 1933 and will be published with MIT Press.

Screening of Malcolm X

Date:

Friday, February 22, 2019, 7:00pm to 11:00pm

Location:

Dudley House Common Room

screening of Malcolm X

This third installment in the Black History Month movie series is somewhat more serious than our earlier Black Panther Screening. It takes a look at the life of the controversial figure that was Malcolm X. In the words of Roger Ebert,

Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" is one of the great screen biographies, celebrating the whole sweep of an American life that began in sorrow and bottomed out on the streets and in prison before its hero reinvented himself. Watching the film, I understood more clearly how we do have the power to change our own lives, how fate doesn't deal all of the cards. The film is inspirational and educational - and it is also entertaining, as movies must be before they can be anything else.

Walking into "Malcolm X," I expected an angrier film than Spike Lee has made. This film is not an assault but an explanation, and it is not exclusionary; it deliberately addresses all races in its audience. White people, going into the film, may expect to meet a Malcolm X who will attack them, but they will find a Malcolm X whose experiences and motives make him understandable and finally heroic.

Every Lee film is an exercise in empathy. He is not interested in congratulating the black people in his audience, or condemning the white ones. He puts human beings on the screen, and asks his audience to walk a little while in their shoes.

Snacks and beverages will be served and, if there is time, it might be nice to open the floor to discussion after.
