Sunday, February 9, 10am-2pm: Harpoon Brewery Tour

Get a first-hand look at how Harpoon produces its beers by joining us on a tour of their brewery. You will get a chance to see Harpoon’s facilities and sample freshly-brewed beer. We will meet at 10:00 AM in front of Dudley House on Sunday, February 9. Bring money for public transportation (red line and bus fare) as well as $5 for the brewery tour. You will need your US driver’s licence or passport (proof you are 21 years or older).

Food Literacy Outing: Tour of the Taza Chocolate Factory

Members of Dudley House will be touring the Taza Chocolate Factory on Friday, November 1.

Learn how Taza makes 100% Stone Ground, Mexican-style organic dark chocolate, sample delicious Stone Ground Dark Chocolate and see their vintage chocolate making machines! The factory is located at 561 Windsor Street in Somerville, MA 02143. We will leave from Dudley House at 3:15pm for the 4pm tour, and return in the evening for games, drinks and light refreshments!

Food Literacy Project Special Event: Greek Meze and Wine Tasting with Diane Kochilas

Meze is the Greek term for "small dishes" that can typify a lovely, light meal. Learn more about the culinary tradition of meze in Greece while sampling three Greek wines and four dishes or "bites" with Greek cooking expert and cookbook author Diane Kochilas.

Enjoy a sampling of Santorini style fava beans & whipped spicy feta, a Dakos salad with rusks and tangerine juice, a savory zucchini pie, and a small sweet bite to finish, with appropriate wine pairings.

Tasting is on Wednesday, October 30, from 5-6pm in Dudley Common Room. Event details and tickets available here (

2013 Boston Local Food Festival, Sunday 10/6

The Boston Local Food Festival will be held on 10/6 from 11am till 5pm. The festival mission is to generate increased demand for local and sustainably produced food through education and promotion. A group of us will meet outside Dudley House at noon and take the T there. The festival promises to be fun, and it will be more enjoyable if you come along with fellow Dudley House members and their guests! Do check out their website for more details.

We still have snow in Boston but it's already in the 70s in the south. Take a break from the snow and join Food Literacy @ Dudley for some tasty southern BBQ. We'll be headed out to Davis Sq, of Flatbread-Bowl-o-Rama fame (our last food excursion to Sacco's), popular college housing option, and the home of Redbones.
Entrees are approximately $10-$16 + cost of transportation.

I Wish I had Some Fish: Sushi Workshop

Flatbread Bowl-o-rama!

Though the history of pizza is neither "clear" nor "well documented" (wikipedia, first used around 997AD), we still know it is delicious. And while candlepin bowling isn't nearly as old (originating in 1880 in new england!) it is still tons of fun! Join Food Literacy @ Dudley for our first food outing! We're traveling to Sacco's Bowl Haven (in Davis Sq) on Tuesday, Dec 8th to enjoy flatbread pizza and perhaps a game of candle pin bowling ("real bowling" to New Englanders).

For people meeting at Dudley we'll be taking the T to Davis Sq. Bring money for the T ($2 each way) and dinner (~$12-15) (also bowling if you want to do that). Tuesday nights part of the proceeds go to charity!

Sacco's has vegan and gluten free pizzas as well so don't let allergies keep you away.

Olive Oil Tasting Course (Tickets sold out)

Do you know how to properly evaluate an olive oil through smell and taste, and the history and political dynamics behind olive oil trade? Come to our tasting and lecture give by Lina Smith, who's on her training to become a Professional Olive Oil Taster and wrote her master thesis about this industry.

In this crash course, we will sample common and rare oils from different geographies and olive varieties, and learn how to qualify them. We will also familiarize ourselves with the two most commonly rampant defects in supermarket oils (fustiness and rancidity). You will come away with a new appreciation for “liquid gold” and an increased confidence in selecting and enjoying olive oil.
